miraDry®

Hyperhidrose

Everyone perspires. However, some perspire more than others (approximately 10% of the population); this increased sweating is referred to as “hyperhidrosis”. Does abnormal sweating make you nervous at work or does it prevent you from taking part in certain social activities? Are you fed up of throwing out your shirts and t-shirts because of underarm stains? miraDry® is the only treatment that can provide you with the best permanent risk-free solution.

The eccrine and apocrine glands produce secretions that cause body odours. They are also known as “sweat glands”. These glands, as well as the hair follicles—which are associated with the apocrine glands—are found in the underarm area below the surface of the skin, in the thickness of the dermis. To help with excessive perspiration, miraDry® produces a thermal energy in the thickness of the dermis in order to eliminate the sweat glands and hair follicles. This process is precise, direct and safe. A continuous hydroceramic cooling process protects the dermis while the heat is distributed. Since the sweat glands and hair follicles are destroyed during the process, the results are long lasting.

Health Canada approved since 2012, miraDry® tackles the root cause of excessive sweating, not its symptoms. After only one treatment, which generally takes about an hour, clinical results have proven to be effective:

  • 82% less perspiration
  • 89% less body odours, and
  • 70% less body hair (all skin types and pigments).

Your doctor will be able to establish a personalized treatment plan according to your condition and desired results.

Process of the treatment

  1. The assessment
During your first visit, the professional will discuss the hyperhidrosis treatment with you. He or she will also conduct an evaluation of your skin and will inquire about your health status.
  2. Procedure plan
First, a local anaesthesia is administered to provide you maximum comfort. Then, a temporary marking is made under your arm with a marker to identify the areas to be treated. Finally, the treatment is conducted eliminating sweat gland and hair follicles causing the perspiration.
  3. The follow-up
During your treatment, we will plan your follow-up visit to evaluate the results and to schedule your next appointment, if necessary.

Generally, one miraDry® treatment is sufficient. However, as with all other medico-aesthetic treatments, your doctor will be able to determine the number of sessions required for your condition and desired results.

F.A.Q

Q:

Is it dangerous to eliminate sweat glands?

A:

Of all the sweat glands in your body, only 2% of them are located in the underarm area. Eliminating 2% of these sweat glands will not affect your body’s ability to cool itself. The purpose of the miraDry® treatment is to considerably reduce underarm perspiration; the other parts of the body will continue to perspire.

Q:

What results should I expect?

A:

From the first treatment, you may expect immediate and long-lasting results. A second treatment may be necessary for those suffering from severe axillary hyperhidrosis.

Q:

Should side effects or a recovery period be expected following a miraDry® treatment?

A:

Although the area treated may be sensitive, swollen, numb or bruised, all of these symptoms are mild and temporary. The majority of patients return to their daily activities immediately after their treatment and continue with their regular sports activities after a few days.
